2022 Environment Month Message from the President

Posted by Mohamad Qusyaire Ezwan Bin Saidon on 01/06/2022 06:18 am

National Environment Month begins today. The Mitsubishi Electric Group has been working to resolve various environmental issues under "Environmental Sustainability Vision 2050," a long-term environmental management vision formulated in June 2019.

Our activities and strategies for reducing the environmental impact of the entire value chain, improving the energy efficiency of our products and systems, and building an advanced social infrastructure, all of which we promote as climate change countermeasures, are highly regarded externally. This is the fifth time we have been awarded the highest ratings in the fields of climate change and supplier engagement by CDP,*1 which has a significant influence on institutional investors. I sincerely appreciate all of your efforts.

Looking at global trends, the world is rapidly moving toward decarbonization. At COP26,*2 held in the United Kingdom last October-November, it was decided to call for participating countries to become "carbon neutral" by mid-century and to implement ambitious climate change measures by 2030. This is an important transitional point towards the target of limiting the increase in global temperature to 1.5°C since the pre-industrial revolution. We must continue to respond promptly to requests from customers, investors, and other stakeholders regarding their concerns related to decarbonization.

In response to these changes in society, following the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain to net zero by FY 2050, which was set in June last year, we announced a new goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing sites and offices by 50% or more by FY 2030 compared to levels in FY 2013 at the management strategy briefing session on 30 May 2022.

We have placed "sustainability" at the core of our management policies, and will work to realize a decarbonized society through our business activities as one of our top priorities. In addition to the steady achievement of these goals, I would like each of you to act with a sense of ownership in promoting how we can accelerate the Group's decarbonization path and fulfill our social responsibility, as well as what we should do as a Group to contribute to the world's decarbonization efforts through our business. Let's bring together the power within and outside of the Group, and work passionately to address the important issues of decarbonization with a sense of responsibility and contribution.

As we enter National Environmental Month, I would like you to focus on the following initiatives.

1. Taking on challenges to transform manufacturing, products, and businesses towards the goals set forth in "Environmental Sustainability Vision 2050"

To achieve even higher targets in areas such as decarbonization and the realization of a circular economy, please take on the challenges of creating new products, services and businesses that cannot be attained simply by extending our current approach, but also utilizing our strengths in IT, AI, and technological innovation, and collaboration with external parties.

2. Expanding and strengthening our environmental contributions by promoting "Environmental Plan 2023"

Please proactively promote additional energy-saving initiatives, the use of renewable energies, and the electrification of facilities in order to reduce in-house greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, please set targets for greenhouse-gas reduction and resource conservation for each product group, and conduct design and development processes while taking environmental performance into consideration. At the same time, I ask you to thoroughly comply with laws and regulations, including those regarding chemical substances contained in products.

3. Promoting and practicing "living in harmony with nature"

Each and every one of you, please be conscious of "thinking about the environment." There are many things that can contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, not only in the workplace but also at home. Let's start with small things that anybody can do easily; for example, using your own shopping bags, cups and bottles regularly. Disseminating this type of message through your actions could lead to big changes for the better in society.

Kei Uruma,

President & CEO
